The situation

A girl called Anya is at a friend's house with three others. They were told not to go in the garden because the ground was wet and freshly seeded, but they did, and now there are muddy footprints across the new grass. The friend's dad is going to be cross. The group quickly decides on a story: the neighbour's cat must have done it. Anya knows a cat didn't leave child-sized muddy prints. But the others are united, confident, already rehearsing it. She's the only one who looks unsure. If she goes along, the group stays happy and the dad might believe it. If she tells the truth, she breaks from her friends and ruins their plan. They're all watching to see if she'll hold the cat story.

Why do you think the group landed on blaming the cat instead of just owning up?
