The situation

A boy called Reuben is doing an online quiz competition in pairs with his partner, Joe. Halfway through, Joe quietly opens another tab and starts searching for the answers. "We'll win this," Joe whispers. "Everyone's probably doing it anyway." Reuben didn't suggest it and didn't want it — but now it's happening, and the answers Joe is feeding him are right. Reuben could stop typing the looked-up answers. He could say "let's not." But Joe's already doing it, they're climbing the leaderboard, and stopping now feels like making a fuss over something already in motion. Reuben isn't the one who started cheating. He's just the one going along with it, answer by answer, telling himself it's mostly Joe.
