A girl called Mia has a friend who's taken to defining her. "Mia's the shy one." "Mia doesn't do stuff like that." "Mia would never." The friend says these things confidently, to other people, as if she's the official expert on who Mia is — and slowly everyone, including Mia, starts treating the friend's version as the truth. The trouble is, the version isn't quite right. Mia isn't actually that shy. She would do some of those things. But every time she tries to step outside the box her friend built, the friend looks surprised or corrects her — "that's so not you" — and Mia shrinks back into the shape she's been assigned. Her friend is writing her character. And Mia is starting to forget she's allowed to write her own.
