The situation

A girl called Jess told one friend, in confidence, that her parents were splitting up. She wasn't ready for anyone else to know. But the friend told one other person "because they'd keep it quiet," and that person told someone else, and within a few days half the year knew. Now kids Jess barely talks to are giving her sympathetic looks, and she feels exposed and betrayed. A boy called Ari was one of the people in the chain — he heard it and passed it on to just one other person, telling himself it wasn't a big deal because "everyone already knew anyway." But everyone knew because of people exactly like him. The private thing Jess shared became public, one "just one person" at a time.
