The situation

You borrowed your friend Theo's special pen — the nice one his grandad gave him — without asking, and you lost it. When he noticed, you said sorry. He said it was okay. But it clearly wasn't. He keeps mentioning the pen, going quiet, looking in his bag like it might turn up. You said sorry, and you meant it. But "sorry" hasn't fixed anything — the pen is still gone, and so is some of the easiness between you. You're starting to realise that an apology might be the start of putting something right, not the whole of it. The question is what comes after sorry.
