A boy called Sam left his homework on the kitchen table overnight. In the morning it was on the floor, one corner chewed and crumpled — the puppy had got to it. When his teacher asked where his homework was, Sam said, "The dog ate it," and everyone laughed, because for once it was actually true. But here's the part Sam left out: he'd been told three times to put his homework in his bag, and he hadn't done it. The dog only got the chance because Sam left it out. "The dog ate it" was true — and also not the whole story. The teacher accepted it with a smile. Sam got away with it. So why doesn't it feel as good as he thought it would?
