The situation

A girl called Lily was part of a group where everyone seemed to have the latest things — the right clothes, the newest gadgets, the stuff that marked you as keeping up. Lily's family didn't have spare money for all that, and she knew it. So Lily started doing little things to hide it. Hinting she had things she didn't. Making excuses for why she "couldn't be bothered" with the latest trend rather than admit she couldn't afford it. The pretending was exhausting, and worse, it made her feel ashamed of her own family, which then made her feel guilty on top of everything else. What Lily hadn't let herself consider was the possibility that the problem wasn't her family's money at all — but a group that measured people by what they owned.
