Making excuses for why she "couldn't be bothered" with the latest trend rather than admit she couldn't afford it. The pretending was exhausting, and worse, it made her feel ashamed of her own family, which then made her feel guilty on top of everything else. What Lily hadn't let herself consider was the possibility that the problem wasn't her family's money at all — but a group that measured people by what they owned.
