The situation

A girl called Leila had been on the netball team for two years and knew everyone's strengths. A new girl, Robyn, joined — keen, but clearly nervous, and not yet as sharp as the others. In the first match, Robyn missed a couple of easy passes. Some of the team started leaving Robyn out — not passing to her, exchanging little looks when she fumbled. It was subtle, but Leila could see it, and she could see Robyn's face falling. Leila wasn't the captain. But she was respected, and she knew the others would follow her lead either way. She could join the quiet freeze-out and stay comfortable with her friends. Or she could be the one who passed Robyn the ball anyway.
