A girl called Grace was allowed to make herself some toast and beans for the first time without a grown-up doing it for her. She was thrilled — proper cooking, all by herself. She'd watched it done a hundred times. It was going well until the pan of beans was ready and she needed to move it off the hot ring. The handle was a bit far, the pan was heavier than she expected, and she was in a rush to get it done before anyone could say she needed help. She reached across the hob, grabbed quickly, didn't quite think about the steam or the heat. Cooking by yourself feels grown-up. But the kitchen, Grace is suddenly aware, doesn't care how grown-up you feel — it just gets hot.
