A girl called Ella and her best friend have been close for two years. But Ella has started to notice that the friendship comes with a lot of unspoken expectations: she always has to choose her friend first for games at recess, can't hang out with other kids without checking with her first, and has to save her friend a seat at lunch every single day, and if Ella doesn't follow these rules, her friend goes cold — 'fine, whatever' in a tone that means the opposite. Ella cares about this friendship. But she's started to feel monitored.
