You've started to notice that you make different choices depending on who's watching. Alone, or with one trusted friend, you'd do the kind thing without thinking. But put a crowd around you — an audience to impress, people whose opinion you care about — and suddenly you hesitate, you calculate, you sometimes do the thing that looks good instead of the thing that is good.
