It started as a laugh. You and some friends were daring each other, and somewhere in the back-and-forth you said you'd do something — you can't even remember agreeing to it properly. Now they're holding you to it, and the thing has grown. What sounded small when you said it has become a real plan with a real audience, and it's the kind of thing that could get you hurt, or in serious trouble. You want to back out. But everyone "remembers" you promised, and now backing out means breaking your word in front of everyone and being called a coward.
