The New Friend
It was Mia's first day at school. She didn't know anyone. Across the room, a girl was building a tall block tower all by herself. Mia wanted to play too, but her feet felt stuck and her words felt shy. How do you even make a new friend when you've never met anyone before? (Feeling words: Shy · Hopeful)
Mia felt shy and hopeful at the same time — nervous about being new, but really wanting a friend. Making a new friend can feel scary, because you don't know if the other person will say yes. But most children are happy to have someone join them, and the girl with the blocks might be hoping for a friend too. The hardest part is just the first hello.
Making a new friend often starts with one small, brave sentence: "Hi, can I play too?" Most of the time, the answer is yes. You don't need to be best friends straight away — you just need to say hello and share one game.
Mia took a big breath and walked over. "Hi, can I play too?" she asked. The girl smiled. "Yes! You can help me build it taller." Just like that, Mia had someone to play with. They built the tallest tower ever, and when it toppled over, they both laughed. By home time, Mia had made her very first friend at playgroup — and it had all started with one little hello.
