The situation

A girl called Zoe discovered filters — the ones that smooth your skin, widen your eyes, slim your face, make you look like a slightly different, "better" version of yourself. At first it was fun. Then it became the only way she'd let herself be photographed. Now Zoe won't post a picture without one. She's started to flinch at her real, unfiltered face in the mirror, like it's the wrong version. The filtered face has become the face she thinks she's supposed to have — and her actual face, the real one, has started to feel like a disappointment by comparison. She edited her face to feel better about it. Somehow it's left her feeling worse.
