The situation

A boy called Theo really wanted to be part of a group. They were the kind who were always daring each other to do things — climb the thing, take the thing, say the thing to the teacher. And one day they turned to Theo. "Go on then. Prove you're not boring." Everyone was watching. The dare wasn't dangerous exactly, but it was the kind of thing that could get him in trouble, or hurt, or humiliated. And Theo understood the real message underneath it: do this, and you're in. Don't, and you never were. He stood there, the whole group's eyes on him, feeling the entire weight of belonging balanced on one stupid dare.
