The situation

A girl in your class called Leah is brilliant at maths. She works hard, she thinks fast, and she's quietly proud of it. She's also, as adults like to point out, very pretty. The trouble is, the only thing people ever seem to compliment her on is her looks. "You're so pretty, Leah." "Such a pretty girl." Even when she gets the top mark in the class, a relative will say, "And so pretty too!" — as if that's the headline. You've noticed she's started to flinch a little when it happens. A compliment is supposed to feel nice. This one is starting to feel like being put in a box.

Why do you think Leah flinches at being called pretty, when it's meant as a compliment?
