The situation

You used to feel fine about your home, your family, where you live. Then you started noticing how some other kids live — bigger houses, fancier holidays, newer everything — and something shifted. You became embarrassed. You started not inviting people over. You went vague when people asked where you lived. Once, you let a friend believe something about your family that wasn't true, because the truth felt less impressive. The strange thing is, nothing about your home actually changed. Your family is the same warm, ordinary family it always was. The only thing that changed is that you started seeing it through someone else's eyes — and decided to be ashamed of it.
