The situation
After a cold week, the pond at the edge of the rec had frozen over. A group of kids dared each other to step on it. One had already edged out a little way and was waving, grinning. They turned to a boy called Sam, who'd been hanging back, and started up the chant: "Sam's scared, Sam's scared." The ice was making faint creaking sounds nobody wanted to mention. Sam wanted to be one of the brave ones. He also had a bad feeling he couldn't shake.
