The situation

You're hurrying to get home before the time you promised, knowing you'll be in trouble if you're late again. Cutting through the park, you find a younger child sitting on the path, crying, with a grazed, bleeding knee and no grown-up in sight. Helping them — finding their adult, getting them sorted — will definitely make you late. A small voice says not my problem, keep walking, you'll get in trouble. A bigger feeling won't let you.
