The situation

A girl called Lily got a message from someone she didn't know. But they knew things — her name, her school, the name of her dog, that she'd been to a concert last weekend. "See? I'm not a stranger, I know all about you," they said. "We're basically already friends." It felt unsettling and almost flattering at once. How did they know all that? Lily didn't realise that every one of those details was sitting in her public posts, free for anyone to read and then repeat back to make themselves seem trusted. The person didn't know her. They'd just read her.
