The situation

A boy called Reuben had a bike he loved and looked after carefully. A friend asked to borrow it — just for a bit, just round the block. Reuben hesitated, but saying no to a friend felt mean, so he handed it over. The friend kept it longer than "a bit." When the bike came back, the gears were clicking and there was a fresh scrape down one side. The friend shrugged it off — "it was already like that," which it wasn't — and didn't offer to fix anything. It was Reuben's bike, his careful looking-after, now dented by someone who didn't seem to care. Next time someone asks to borrow something precious, Reuben will face the same fork: be generous and risk this, or protect his things and seem stingy.
