The situation

For the first time, you're home on your own for a little while. Your parent has gone out, left a number, told you the rules, and trusted you to be sensible. The door is locked. The house is quiet in a way it never is when someone else is in it. It feels grown-up and exciting — and also, if you're honest, a tiny bit unnerving. Every normal house noise sounds louder. You're aware that if something happened, it'd be you who had to deal with it. You keep half-listening for the front door. Then the doorbell rings. It's not a noise you expected, and your heart jumps. There's nobody to look at to check what you should do. The decision is entirely yours.
